I remember thinking that there was nothing past the age of 30. I remember thinking people were so old at 30. I remember thinking I will never be 30, that is centuries away. Well, the time has come for 30 to become a reality. Brandon will always be older than me and for that I am grateful! He will always experience those "never" moments before me which is great in my opinion. Maybe not so much for him. However, I know he will show me how those "never" moments can be turned into something far greater than expected.
In honor of this great milestone I decided to throw him a surprise party. If you know the Baller, you know his friends, "the boys," are his family and that beyond them his other true loves include his real family, BYU football and the Jazz. With that in mind you understand that Brandon having a birthday in September makes life a little impossible for me, at least when I am trying to throw a party. I scheduled an event at a nearby park, only to find out that it interfered with a Y game. Not just any game, but a "big game," because they are all "BIG GAMES." Well I knew with absolute certainty there was no way I would get him away from the house during a game. Why didn't I opt for a Friday night you ask? Well, he decided to take Cannon to a Fathers and Son camp out so I couldn't request him not to go without arising some suspicion. So I opted for plan b. I moved the time up to an hour before game time and invited all the "boys" over for the game post SURPRISE! Everyone agreed, now the tricky part was going to be getting him to leave an hour before the game started, you know because of all the pregame mumble jumble. Early in the day he had asked if there was anything I wanted to do or anywhere I wanted to go because come 4o'clock he wasn't going anywhere. A potential problem. Lucky for me, the sap fell asleep mid afternoon making him feel a little guilty about not spending some quality family time, so when I suggested we make a quick trip the park he agreed. Phew!!! I am sure he was spatting off some choice words in his mind about how he already said he didn't want to go anywhere at 4pm and I knew a game was coming on etc, etc. It's amazing what a little child inflicted guilt can do. :)
We made our way to the park and B noticed some friends, comments on how that's weird that they would be all the way out here, especially when a game was about to start. Still connecting the dots. Sees his mom and sister, comments on how weird it is that they are here too. Finally it dawns on him and he realizes they are all there for him and the big 3-0!
We had ourselves some less than quality Little Ceasers, but it is a favorite of Brandon's and it is cheap, and some delicious cake! The gathering was cut short because you know, there was a "big game" and all.
Yes, it was ten year old boy who wrote his name on the cake. Actually, it was a 20 something fella who worked in the bakery at Sam's and was the only one on duty. I am positive this isn't his job on a regular basis, at least according to what I can see.
I am so thankful that Brandon has such great friends that love and support him. They truly are family to him and we are so blessed to have so many. I think having them all there was the best birthday present of all. Thank you!
Admittedly, not the best picture I have ever taken!
I couldn't have pulled it off without the help of Brandon's amazing mom and sisters. He loves you more than you will ever know and I know he was happy that you were there to share his big day!
So, Holler Baller you are 30 and will always be older than me. :) Can't wait to see what life past 30 brings to you and our family. I love you and hope you had a terrific birthday!!!!
